Forensic Scene Mapping:
| In the olden days a few years back,
the only methods we had for accident scene measurements
were fiberglass tapes and rollertapes. Now, scenes can be
Mapped by using the equipment used by civil engineers and
land surveyors. The information from these maps produce
very precise measurements of physical evidence found at
an accident scene. We currently use a SOKKIA Electronic
Total Station for exacting maps.
We have sponsored and taught a Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training certified course in Forensic Mapping. SOKKIA supplied the necessary hardware and lesson support for this course. It was given to the North Georgia Annual Update for Accident Investigators and Reconstructionists in May, 1997 in Roswell, Georgia. A recent Mapping class was given at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and attended by Judges, Attorneys, Georgia Troopers, Roswell and Lawrenceville Police officers, as well as members of the Douglas County Traffic Unit. Courses in CAD subsequent to Mapping have been given to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office. Attendees were primarily police officers in the North Georgia area who investigate and reconstruct serious injury and fatal traffic accidents. Additionally, commercially available Forensic Mapping Training has been given to Houston County, Georgia Sheriff's Office and to the Prince Georges County, Virginia Police Department.
For more information on Forensic Mapping see our web page for information and links to SOKKIA, our favored supplier of high resolution detailed mapping data. Locally, we use Repro Products in Smyrna for software and harware supplies. To see examples of what we have been able to do with this technology, see our page on Computer Diagraming.
